Arizona's Immigration Law

Arizona's immigration law states...

"For any lawful contact made by a law enforcement official or a law enforcement agency…where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States, a reasonable attempt shall be made, when practicable, to determine the immigration status of the person…"

Ok, so when asked "do you think this will lead to racial profiling?" police are saying "it's not like we are just going to go around just arresting people that look like they are from another country."

They will only arrest people who are "reasonably suspicious" or whatever they say. This means that the person will have to have beem committing a crime or have other reasons to be pulled over or arrested. So, after being arrested or pulled over, if the cop is suspicious that the person is an illegal immigrant than they can ask for paper work and so on...

My thing is, what makes you suspicious that someone is an illegal immigrant. The only answer I can come up with is skin color or racial profiling. I'm not saying that the amount of illegal immigrants is not a problem or whatever because I really don't know much about it. However, I will say that there kind of isn't a way that a law like this could be passed without there being some sort of racial issue unless they asked for paperwork or whatever they ask for from everyone they stopped. If they do so then I guess things would be different because you can't tell where someone is from just from their appearance. Someone could have Mexican heritage but be born and raised in the United States. Also, someone could be born in Mexico but born to white parents so they don't look Mexican at all and can never get asked to provide legal documentation that they are a citizen. I'm just saying they need to be fair about this and make sure it doesn't turn into a racial thing.

Oklahoma Anti-Abortion Laws

Oklahoma's Anti-Abortion Laws are ridiculous!!! First off, I feel as though any LAW forbidding abortion is wrong from the beginning! I don't necessarily agree with abortion personally, but I feel that it is definitely a choice that should be able to be made by the woman and not the government. But then to top it off, these laws are stating that any women seeking an abortion must have a doctor perform an ultrasound and explain the images seen in detail. Also, Rape and incest victims are not even exempt from the law.

This law disgusts me. I feel like it is not the goverments place to put laws on something a lot of them, being men, know nothing about in the first place. I feel like it is a violation of rights somehow and also I feel as though even banning rape and incest victims from going through the procedure is just cruel. What if it were one of their 12 year old daughters, god forbid, that would get raped by some disgusting pervert and gotten pregnant. The law definitely wouldn't exist then or i'm about 100% sure it would be bent "under the circumstances." Sickening!

Athlete's GPAs

In a California high school the athlete's collaborative GPAs for each sport are posted on the school's website. They also have posters hanging up in the hallways of athletes reading and helping each other and have a very strict policy when it comes to having good grades in order to play.

I feel as though this is a very good structure and every school, especially the high school's in York, need to practice this. They claim that the rule exists where if you get bad grades you don't play. But truthfully, as a former varsity cheerleader, I know the inside scoop. At my old high school, York High, players, especially very valued Varsity players, were often told "i'm going to let you slide." To many of the coaches winning was very important and players often played while their grades in some of their classes were Ds and Fs. Even some of the teachers were in on it. I remember teachers giving players extensions on papers and ignoring MVPs that would be texting on their cell phones or talking in class. I guess it was the fear of getting them detention or suspended so that they couldn't play in the games. I know that I am definitely not the only one who witnessed this during their high school days.

Snitching In Chicago

The "no snitching" phenomenon is actually something that is going on all over the United States. However, I recently read an article that said in Chicago, cops are taking a stand.

To back track a little bit, the "no snitching" phenomenon is when someone commits a crime and someone else knows about it and knows who did it but doesn't tell the cops.

The reason people do not want to snitch is because they are scared to get hurt or killed by the person who committed the crimes or other criminals. The point I guess is to eliminate the snitches or "get back" at them for snitching. In chicago this is a serious issue. In a 12 hour period, 7 people were killed and 18 were wounded. A guy named Robert Tate was shot and lying on the ground when the cops asked "do you know who shot you?" He responded "I know, but i'm not telling you." Cops are frustrated with this issue and they started a new campaign called Silence Kills. They also started a new system where people could text tips, or things they know,to the police anonymously. In one year they made 22 arrests from the anonymous tips.

In my opinion, this is a very good idea and a good way to eliminate "snitching." I feel like anyone would agree that if it was someone in your family or a friend who got shot or something and you knew who did it but were scared for your safety, then you would want a system like this around. York should introduce a system like this because there are a lot of shootings and innocent people are getting killed. There are careless criminals, running the same streets that children play on, that need to be arrested!

Open Admissions Policy

The open admissions policy at HACC is a good idea. One reason why it is a good idea is because it gives people who may have not been serious about their future as a teen another chance. Maybe they graduated and got a reality check that they may need to further their education to get a good enough paying job to keep up. Another reason it is a good idea is because it gives older people a chance to come back and get their education without discrimination on what they remember from high school or the past. One last reason it is a good idea to have an open admissions policy is because it gives anyone a chance at an education. Anybody who wants to learn and grow deserves the chance. One reason why people don't agree with the open admissions policy is because they feel like too many people drop out and waste time and money. Another reason might be because they want the school to be selective or prestiguous which I think takes away from the whole point of the community college. One last reason that people are against the open admissions policy could be they want everyone to be on the same level and not have anyone who needs special attention or can't keep up in their classes.

Women Now A Majority In Workplace

For the first time in recorded history women outnumber men on nation's payrolls -
New York Times

The New York Times is calling the recession a "man-cession" being that more men are unemployed than women during these times. Last month women held 50.3% of nonfarm payroll jobs and only 3.9 million women have lost jobs versus the 7.4 million men. I think if there ever was a time to prove our strength and to promote women equality, now would be the best time ever. It wasn't too long ago when women weren't even allowed to work and even though we are proving that we are just as capable as any man, we are still getting treated unfair. Today women make only about 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. For minority women it is even worse. Asian American women make 88 cents, African American women make 72 cents and Latina women make 60 cents. This doesn't make sense to me at all, especially during times like these with these kind of statistics. If the majority of the workforce today is women, then it is true that women are partially holding up the economy and still being treated as subordinates. Some say this recent rise in women working is due to seasonal men work, such as construction, being down right now during the winter. They also try to say that more women are working because they tend to choose jobs that withstand financial downturns such as government, healthcare and education while men choose usually choose business and manufacturing which rise and fall with the economy. In my opionion, I still stand firm on my belief that women are not receiving the amount of credit, pay or respect they should be getting.

Recession & College

Recently the recession has taken a big toll on college tuition and also caused colleges to make some cuts. Last year I attended Clark Atlanta University. The cost of attendance for the year was 30,000 which was already ridiculous. When the recession hit, there was talk that they were going to raise tuition even further. This is one of the many reasons I decided to come back home and go to school in PA. During the second semester that I was there, they started cutting teachers and a lot of my classes got messed up. I had to change English classes about 4 times because my teachers were being layed off and we were already about 3-4 weeks into the semester when I finally got settled causing me to be behind. Another way the recession was taking a toll on college was that a lot of private loan sources were cutting people's funding off. A few of my friends had gotten their money pulled from underneath them in the middle of the semester causing them to have to leave school. Others got evicted out of thier dorms because thier funding didn't cover thier rent anymore. To avoid any of this happening to me I decided to stay close to home and only take loans from well established and well known lenders that seem secure.
